      Learning Objectives:

By the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:

•Identify specific areas of stress for them as a resident

      •Define and recognize burnout

•Design and implement personalized coping strategies to facilitate exam preparation and deal with the stress of exams

•Know the 5 C’s of Resilience, and identify strategies to enhance resilience to prevent burnout

      Abstract:

Stress is inherent in residency, and can lead to burnout.  Recent studies of residents in the Canada and US show that up to 60 % suffer from burnout.  This presentation is designed to assist residents in understanding why stress occurs in the medical workplace, and recognizing early warning signs of stress and burnout.  They will be able to identify their own sources of stress, and learn how to prevent burnout.

We will focus on the specific stress of preparing for the specialty exams.  Key strategies for successful exam preparation will be offered.

Participants will also learn how to enhance their resiliency to better manage stress.  Resiliency is the ability to bounce back after such stress and being psychologically challenged.  It depends on your ability to manage your personal emotional reactions, and to respond effectively to others when they are stressed.  The five key components of resiliency will be outlined.  Methods are outlined for implementation of strategies that address each component to assist in preventing burnout and promoting resilience.
